Clinical Dietitian
The clinical dietitian provides assessment, treatment and counseling to patients with nutrition-related issues.
- Dietitians translate scientific evidence-based research on nutrition, health and disease and apply this information into practical nutrition guidelines to help patients understand the relationship between food and health. The dietitian will ensure implementation of a proper diet and educate with the goal of maintaining or improving patient health and prevent disease in individuals and communities.
- The Registered Dietitian works in collaboration within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure optimal nutrition during treatment/rehabilitation which consequently enables the patients to fully participate in their treatment/therapies.
- Dietitian also provides assessment, monitoring and education in outpatient setting so patients can better manage their medical condition with specific diets and improved eating patterns.
PJSC clinical dietitians provide inpatient and outpatient services to all departments.
Nutrition Support
Patients who are critically ill and malnourished may experience loss of appetite and/or swallowing difficulties. Hence, depending solely on their diet/food intake to meet nutritional requirements may not be sufficient for them. Dietitians play the paramount role of tailoring nutritional support plans according to patients’ medical conditions, nutritional requirements and preferences.
Types of nutritional support include:
- Oral nutritional supplements which including fortifying the food
- Enteral tube feeding
- Parenteral nutrition
Referral Process
A referral from PJSC physician is required to access the service from PJSC Dietitian.
Inpatient & Outpatient services:
Dietitians assess patients’ nutritional status and develop individualised nutrition care plans based on patients’ medical, dietary and psychosocial history. Medical nutrition therapy is provided to patients with the following conditions (but not limited to):
- Cancer – includes during treatment e.g. Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy
- Dysphagia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, nuerosurgery
- Diabetes [type 2]
- Dyslipideamia
- Heart failure
- Chronic kidney disease includes dialysis
- Overweight/obesity
